Huntington Learning Center offers a comprehensive range of tutoring and test prep services for students in kindergarten through grade 12 with learning disabilities and ADHD so they can reach their academic goals.

If you believe your child’s school has not provided a free appropriate public education or appropriate academic services, Huntington can help. Huntington partners with families, educators, lawyers, and advocates to give every student the best education possible.

Under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), every student is guaranteed a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Individual states have state laws and polices about special education.

Huntington can provide you with the independent educational evaluation that IDEA requires. You or your school pay for this evaluation.

The Impartial Hearing and your Rights

If you believe your child’s education rights have been violated, IDEA offers you a means to pursue a solution. You have the right to request an Impartial Hearing if you believe the school has not provided your child with an appropriate education or academic services, or if you disagree with the Department of Education’s (DOE) ruling about your child’s special education placement, services, evaluations, classification, or eligibility.

Huntington partners with advocates and attorneys to help you navigate the Impartial Hearing process. Huntington can provide experts to testify on behalf of our academic evaluation and proposed tutoring program at Impartial Hearings and other meetings.

If your child’s school declines or is unable to provide the tutoring services that are required by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP), you have the following options:

• The DOE must arrange for an outside agency, such as Huntington, to provide the services
• Huntington offers compensatory services
• If the DOE denies your request, you can file an Impartial Hearing

Legal Remedies

  Huntington’s academic evaluation pinpoints your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses and prescribes an individualized learning program to reach his or her academic goals.
• Enhanced Rate, Private Tutor
  Huntington provides 1-1 tutoring and test prep programs.
• Compensatory Services
  If your child did not receive the educational services required by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP) or was otherwise incorrectly served, your child may be entitled to compensatory or make-up services. To receive compensatory services, you may need to request an Impartial Hearing. Huntington provides compensatory tutoring services.

School Meetings

Huntington believes in the Huntington-Home-School connection. Our expert staff is available to attend meetings, such as IEP or 504 meetings. At these meetings, we review the results of our academic evaluation, as well as our recommended instructional program.

Special Education Advocates and Attorneys

We work with special education advocates and attorneys to help students get the best education possible. Huntington’s programs are customized for each student. Our methodology ensures that we deliver outstanding results. We do the following:

• Conduct an Academic Evaluation.
• Analyze the evaluation and develop a learning plan. We review the results with the family. With the family’s consent, we can provide the advocate and attorneys the results and learning plan, and testify on behalf of our results.
• Provide 1-1, personalized instruction at our accredited centers.
• Update the family on progress with monthly meetings and progress reports.

With parental permission, we can provide the advocate or attorney with the academic evaluation results and program results for mediation and due process purposes. We are available to testify on behalf of our evaluation and program, to attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, and to visit the student’s school, when appropriate.

The Huntington methodology is based on almost 40 years of academic experience helping hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. Each learning program is customized to the individual student providing personalized attention and proven results. We work with multi-sensory curricula and build executive functioning skills in addition to phonics, reading, writing, math, and study skills programs.

Huntington teachers and staff adhere to the highest standards in the conduct of our programs and services outlined in our Code of Ethics. We pride ourselves on professionalism, confidentiality, and honesty.

Huntington partners with districts, schools, and non-profit organizations to provide in-school test prep services. Our In-school Test Prep service consists of our offering an ACT or SAT course in a school or other facility. The course is funded by the school or other organization (such as a PTA) or, in some cases, the students pay for their own instruction.

The course is completely customizable, based on school and student requirements. For example, course length varies, but typically is at least 18 hours in duration. Because the ACT has four subjects, the minimum duration is 28 hours. Class size also depends on the needs of the school and students, but the student-teacher ratio typically is at most 10-1. Similarly, the duration of each class can vary, but two or three hours per session is typical.

With all courses, we offer full-length proctored exams to provide students with practical experience taking the exams. Each exam is approximately four hours in length.

We offer an optional online component to supplement our courses, called Huntington Online Prep. It is video-based instruction and is a terrific supplement to the in-school instructional experience. It is a comprehensive online program that enables students to study at their leisure wherever they can access the internet. It includes all subject areas, as well as full-length exams.

Since 2002, we have been an official provider under the No Child Left Behind Act, servicing thousands of students in school districts nationwide.

Federal funding and entitlement grants are available to help eligible schools and districts provide additional learning opportunities and academic support to their students. Huntington’s individualized tutoring programs are aligned with these funding programs.

We’ve Passed the Test

You can be proud to have Huntington’s tutoring and test prep programs in your school because we’ve "passed the test." Each state creates an application and establishes criteria for approving providers. At a minimum, states must require an approved provider to demonstrate that it:

• Has a proven track record of raising student achievement in academic subjects, such as reading and math.
• Offers high-quality, research-based instruction focused on improving student academic achievement.
• Offers services that are inline with state standards.
• Is financially sound.
• Complies with Federal, state, and local health, safety, and civil rights laws.

Huntington Excels in Improving Reading

The Chicago Public Schools conducted a study of SES tutoring programs during 2006-2007 in which Huntington was demonstrated to excel in improving reading. The study was authored by Curtis Jones, Ph.D., Senior Research Analyst of the Office of Extended Learning Opportunities of the Chicago Public Schools.

In Chicago, Supplemental Educational Services (SES) instruction was provided under the No Child Left Behind Act to low-income students who attended schools that were identified as "in need of improvement" for three consecutive years. The report examined the impact of the overall program on the achievement of elementary school students. The outcomes used to determine the impact of the SES program were Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) reading and math achievement gains.

The study says: "In reading, students in the Huntington Learning program demonstrated significantly greater achievement gains than students eligible for SES that did not participate… Further, the size of the impact on the reading achievement gains were analyzed. Based on the difference in actual and expected reading achievement gains, Huntington Learning demonstrated large impact on the reading achievement gains of participants."

Huntington can partner with districts and schools to provide state-funded tutoring or test-prep programs. Our individualized programs are aligned with these funding programs and designed to identify and focus on each student’s specific academic needs.

Florida’s McKay Scholarship Program

Select Huntington Learning Centers in Florida offer the McKay Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities.

The McKay Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program, originally created in 1999, provides scholarships for eligible students with disabilities to attend an eligible public or private school of their choice. Students with disabilities include K-12 students who are documented as having an intellectual disability; a speech or language impairment; a hearing impairment, including deafness; a visual impairment, including blindness; a dual sensory impairment; an emotional or behavioral disability; a specific learning disability, including, but not limited to, dyslexia, dyscalculia, or developmental aphasia; a traumatic brain injury; a developmental delay; or autism spectrum disorder. Florida’s school choice program offers school choice for the best educational setting, be it public or private, for a student.
